World's most storied tobacco; produces wrapper, binder, and filler of unmatched complexity

The most storied tobacco growing region in the world. Limestone-rich lowland soil in western Cuba. Produces the wrapper, binder, and filler used by virtually all Habanos S.A. brands. The unique soil chemistry — red clay over limestone — and the morning mists from the Viñales valley create conditions impossible to replicate elsewhere.

The Brand

Montecristo logo
Est.1935HQHavana, CubaFactoryH. Upmann Factory (Partagás Factory), Havana

Founded 1935. Named after Alexandre Dumas' novel. The world's most recognised Cuban cigar brand. The No.2 torpedo is the single most awarded cigar in Cigar Aficionado history.

1961

Nationalised by the Cuban revolution

The Cuban government nationalises all tobacco companies following the revolution. Montecristo becomes part of the state-owned Habanos S.A. enterprise. The Menéndez family and many rollers emigrate — carrying their expertise to start new brands abroad.

1935

Founded by Alonso Menéndez and José García

Montecristo is founded in Havana. Workers at the factory traditionally had a reader ('el lector') who read novels aloud during rolling shifts. Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo was a favourite — the name stuck.
